Sexton elever från St Christine, och elever från ytterligare fem skolor i trakten har deltagit i en ettårig utbildning om HIV/AIDS. Projektet har finansierats av Forum Syd på initiativ av Karopa Integrated CBO.  Eleverna är i åldern 12-14 år och har lärt sig bland annat om ledarskap, social utveckling, medvetenhet om HIV/AIDS, jämställdhet mellan könen, ekonomisk egenmakt (empowerment), fredsarbete, och näringslära. Eleverna fick också lära sig miljövård, att sköta höns och trädgårdsodling. Alla fick trädplantor och grönsaksplantor att plantera hemma. De fick också delta i ett hönsprojekt vid sin skola.

Ledningen för projektet organiserade i juli en fin examensceremoni för de 96 deltagarna. Eleverna är nu Time to Act Kabondo Ambassadors, med uppgift att sprida sina kunskaper vidare i Kabondo med omnejd.

RE:TAK PROJECT

TAK(Time To Act Kabondo) is a project that was being implemented by KAROPA CBO.It was basically to create awareness on HIV/AIDS among young boys and girls  of 12 -14 years of age.The project was implemented in six primary school,of which st.christine was part.Each school gave atotal of 16 pupils,both boys and girls in equal ratio to participate in the project as from mid 2016.

For st.christine the project had a lot of relevance since the pupils who learn here are either partial or total orphans who in other cases lost the either of their parents due to the pandemic or related situations.This provided a learning forum for many of our pupils,about the disease.They were well trained on areas such as leadership,capacity building,social innovation,HIV/AIDS awareness,gender equality,economic empowerment,peace building,nutrition awareness,lifeskills, sexual awareness and cultural practice.We had a very capable,jovial,interested and a concerned trainer –Mercy Wendy, who was ever ready and willing to help the pupils at all times.Her lessons were very interesting  and lively.All the participants seemed to be interested,again, all the staff members have been actively involved throughout the process.

Besides,the participants were also taught on environmental conservation,poultry keeping and kitchen gardening.Each of them was provided with tree and vegetable seedlings to plant at home and a poultry project in school.For a period of one year, the participants learnt a lot and completed having fully learnt much.

To mark the end of thie project, the management organized a very wonderful graduation ceremony for the 96 participants.They graduated as Time To Act Kabondo Ambassadors,with a major role of spreading the good news about HIV/AIDS awareness in kabondo and beyond.They are expected to be educating the fellow pupils in school when schools open next term.

Här kommer en rapport från Augustine om skolans framgångar i den nationella musikfestivalen i Kakamega:

The NATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL July 2017

Hello everyone,

The festivals began on Monday 10^th July, with the teams arriving on Sunday 9^th July. We travelled safely to the venue and made the necessary arrangements just before we could perform. Just to mention, our team rehearsed briefly and we also had the pupils recording their song with education radio. Our school presented an ECDE singing game under class 802G. A total of fourteen teams were registered and performed under the same class.

Of all the teams, we were ranked position one with 91%. Congratulations to the team and the school. In addition, I would like to thank Vera for her immense contributions and commitment towards the success of both music and drama activities in the past. She has really done so much to the teams and the school and we have always walked shoulder high when it comes to these.

Following that good performance, we were awarded certificates and a trophy. We had a safe travel back to school. On our way back, we visited a historic site of a  ‘crying stone’. We arrived at around  5.45 pm Kenyan time.

On Wednesday 12^th July, we officially announced the festival results to the rest of the school members at the assembly and handed over the trophy to the school administration. Thanks to all the participants, trainers, our sponsors and everyone who supported the festival in various ways.

Hi,
We received an additional  trophy for being the overall best school in ecde singing under class 802G and our participants and the school were awarded certificates.We presented them today at the assembly and each child took home her certificate.

Latest news from S:t Christine School in Kabondo
New library
The building at the extension of the outdoor classroom (building 5, ex. classroom for 4th grade) is seriously affected by insects and hasn’t been used for a while. Now we have received a donation from two members of the Society, Bo Riddarström and Eva Rudberg, which makes it possible to demolish the building and replace it with a new one built with bricks. It will be used as library, and being a little higher than the old one and having more windows its interior will be lighter and more functional as a reading room. The demolition work is finished and the building of new walls has started.
Project
The school has been given the opportunity to utilize a piece of land belonging to the school’s head master David and Albinus
Odada. An extra contribution from Sweden allows us to plant corn and sukumawiki, which we hope will make the school a bit more self sustaining. There has come some rain recently, so we have good hope to be able to harvest in August. Hopefully this will suffice to provide part of the food for one semester.
The following we have received from Charles, who is the local responsible for the farming project.
We have worked hard with the plantations and both David’s and Odada’s land are planted and ready. The school garden is also planted and within about a month we expect not to have to buy vegetables on the market for the third semester.
Most corn farms in Kenya were hit by a disease caused by a worm, which affects the internals of the plant and then spreads outward and makes the corn leaves ”bleed”. This is a problem, which occurs from time to time in Kenya and especially in Rift Valley and Nyanza, where the school is located. We still haven’t got the pesticides needed to fight the disease from the farming administration, but most farmers try to spray their farms with pesticides, which they use for other crops. We plan to spray the school’s corn fields next week. The pictures show that the corn is still OK, but that some plants are affected by the worm.

A visit to the school in week 9
During week 9 Helén and Anders Jansson visited the school together with their son Robert, daughter i law Victoria and grandchildren Emma and Adam. Below are some thoughts by the children from the visit to the school.

Adam 11 years
I thought it was fun to see how children in other parts of the world live. I got many new friends. The children showed us around in the school and we told them about Sweden. And I would like to come back again.
Emma 13 years
I thought the all the children and teachers were very happy and nice. It looked like fun. We went around and visited all the classes. All the children were droll and happy all the time. Many of them wanted to show me around. It was fun and very nice to visit and I would come back and visit them soon again.

The Kenya Day, April 23
On April 23 we arranged our Members’ Day at Park Folkets hus in Liseberg. The flow of arriving people was a bit slow in the beginning, but as the day went on, the number increased. During the day the latest information from the school was given by Ulla Stureaus and Kerstin Lindberg, who showed pictures from the school. Our Café with among others Kenyan pastries was appreciated. At the end of the day we could establish that both the Café and the sale of Kenyan fabrics, gems etc. had given a much desired addition to the account. Many thanks to Park Folkets hus, which offered its premises for free and to all those, who in different ways contributed to making it a successful day.

County Music Festival Report
(A short summary of a message from the school).
We are happy to tell that our pupils performed well in the above event. The competition were held in a place far away from the school in Homa Bay. We left the school at 4.00 AM in order to arrived in time, and we managed to be in place at 9.00 AM. A challenge for the pupils was that they had woken up early and traveled far, but they managed to carry out the day’s performances successfully. The competitions were tougher than in previous years. The results were a trophy and a certificate for good achievements. Two teams will proceed to next regional level to be held in Siaya County June 11th to 19th.
After the competition the pupils visited a historic site, NYAMGONDHO, which tells about a family, who used to live at lake Victoria and later disappeared. After the visit we began our journey home at 16.30 and arrived at 21.00.

WEEK TWO TERM 2-2017 REPORT

Hi,

Week two was busy with a lot of activities.We sponsored exams for class 8 candidates as head start exam. We will send the result when is released next week.

We also had the music team on Thursday going for the Sub County Music Festivals.Two teams managed position one as one was position two. The three items will proceed to the next level in the coming weeks.

WEEK THREE TERM 2-2017 REPORT

We are pleased to report that our term’s activities are on course and we hope for the best. This being second term in schools’ calendar, we have Music and Athletics as co-curriculum activities going on.However, classwork also is always in progress.

This week we had athletics competitions in preparation for the subsequent levels come next week.
We continually work to create a good environment for our pupils to learn. As we wind up this week,we had a preacher from the local community to teach the word of God to the school. Finally, We always wish you well in all your endeavors and thank you for your sincere commitment towards the success of the school here.Thank you.

Odlingsprojektet, gardening project

Skolan har fått möjlighet att disponera en del mark som tillhör skolans rektor David Ouma Ochola, samt Albinus Odada. Ett extra bidrag från Sverige ger oss möjlighet att plantera majs och sukumawiki, som vi hoppas ska göra skolan mer självförsörjande. Det har regnat en del nyligen, så vi har goda förhoppningar om att kunna skörda i augusti. Förhoppningsvis räcker det till en viktig del av maten i en termin. Läs mer i Nyhetsbrev 79.

The following  is the message from Charles.

Hi, Hope you are okay i Sweden. We are fine in school. We have worked hard on our farms and both at David’s and Odada’s the first weeding is over. The school garden is now complete with vegetable and after a period of less than one month from now we’ll not be purchasing vegetables from the market. What is affecting most maize plantations in Kenya is a disease caused by a warm and is affecting the inside of the maize plant spreading outwards and causing the maize leaves to wilt automatically. This is a disaster experienced in Kenya especially in Rift Valley and Nyanza regions. To date we haven’t received exact insecticide to curb the disease from the Agricultural sector but most farmers are trying to spray their farms using the normal insecticides used for other crops. We are also planning to spray the whole garden next week. From the pictures you can see how the maize is healthy but some are affected by the dangerous worm. Hope to give you other reports later.

Nytt bibliotek

Byggnaden i förlängningen av utomhusklassrummet, (byggnad 5, fd klassrum för årskurs 4) är allvarligt angripet av insekter och har inte använts på ett tag. Nu har vi fått en donation från två medlemmar i föreningen, Bo Riddarström och Eva Rudberg, som möjliggör att den angripna byggnaden kunnat rivas och ersätts med en ny i tegel. Nybyggnaden ska användas som bibliotek. Den blir lite högre än den nuvarande oh får fler fönster så att interiören blir ljusare och ska fungera bättre som läsesal. Arbetet med rivningen av det befintliga huset är klart och uppbyggnaden av de nya väggarna har påbörjats.

Hi. Today I have  gone round to take the pictures of our farms. So far so good. The last plot was being planted today as some in my farm require weeding. We hope to start weeding this week.
